How to get the best results from Push Notifications

Push notifications are less intrusive than other types of user engagement as the user is required to give consent to receive them. They can effectively help users and drive traffic by providing useful information.

Title (Max 30 characters incl. spaces)

As this is the first thing your potential customers will see, the title should be interesting enough to capture the users attention and creating curiosity, resulting in them reading the rest of the notification and clicking on the CTA (call to action). Keep it simple and snappy, the title should clearly state what the notification is about and characters are limited so choose your words wisely.

Description (Max 200 characters incl. spaces)

This is your opportunity to express to the user in a brief explanation what the notification is about. Ensure it is keeping within the same theme as the title, include the benefits of the potential customer clicking on the notification. Try to ensure the text is not cut towards the end and keep within the character limit.

Image for the push notification (Minimum size 360x240 px, recommended 720x480 px)

Including an image in your push notification will make it much more appealing for the user. Using the right, high quality image can lead to a huge increase in the click through rate.

Call to action

The call to action in the push notification should guide the user what they should do, if you do not include a CTA it will lead to a decreased CTR (click through rate). These can include CTA’s benefit for example ‘download brochure, discount code, send me a brochure’. A free trial CTA would read like ‘click here for free trial, read more, click for offer’ etc.

Logo

Notifications without a logo have a much lower chance of success. You should always include your logo which creates a branding of yours within the users’ mind.

Landing page

Push notifications are not the same as emails which allow the user to revisit, they are not stored anywhere so it is important that the landing page is relevant when the user clicks on the CTA.

Checklist

Run through all elements of the notification before you send it out: is the title intriguing? Does the description give users a brief insight into what the notification is about? Does the CTA guide the user on what to do next? Is the landing page relevant?
